With few internal threats to its national security and very few internally displaced persons or group grievances based on past or present injustices, Taiwan edges out Japan to make it one of the top 10 safe and secure places globally.
The limited risk of demographic instability resulting from border disputes, control of religious or historical sites and proximity to environmental hazards helps place the island in the best quartile of the global index on the human flight variable.
Taiwan suffers from moderate levels of crime, with the latest survey data indicating that 4 percent of people had been assaulted in the previous 12 months, while 15 percent had property stolen, placing the country 40th and 66th globally for these respective variables. Still, almost two-thirds of respondents claimed to feel safe walking alone at night, which is above the global average.
