Perhaps best known around the world for its ban on the import and sale of chewing gum, Singapore has a no-nonsense attitude to law and order that helps it top our list of the top 10 safest places in the Asia-Pacific.
A tiny 0.1 percent of respondents reported being assaulted or mugged in the 12 months prior to a 2009 survey, while just 1.1 percent had property stolen over the same period, making the city state the safest place in the world on both measures. As a result, 98 percent of Singaporeans feel safe walking the streets at night—by far the highest percentage in the world.
Singapore has almost no national security problems and emigration among intellectuals, political dissidents and the middle class is relatively low. However, Singaporeans don’t feel safe expressing political opinions, placing Singapore 80th globally on this variable.
