Earlier today in New York, Mahinda Rajapaksa told the United Nations General Assembly that he aims to make Sri Lanka ‘one of the top 30 countries for doing business by 2014’ (while focusing also on recovery, peace and equality for its society overall).
That goal might have seemed farfetched even just a couple of years ago, but with its economy growing this year at its fastest rate since 2002, the situation for Sri Linka is clearly improving. Moreover, Rajapaksa claims that ninety percent of those who were displaced during the three decades of devastating civil war have returned to their villages and are resuming ‘normal’ lives.
These days, the economic plans of smaller, developing Asian nations often seem to place considerable weight on revenue from tourism. For Sri Lanka, restoring public safety is an obvious and critical step for its own aspirations in this regard.
So I recently spoke to a globe-trotting friend, Jeremy Ryan, who is visiting the country, and asked him for some insight into what it’s like to travel in Sri Lanka today.
On the aftermath of the conflict and the military presence he told me, ‘There are still many police checkpoints (tourists just get waved through) depending on where you are in the country. The military presence, especially in Colombo, is very strong. At first this was a bit of a worry for me, but the more I asked around the more I realized that the military roaming the streets is more of a comfort for the average Sri Lankan. Thirty years of war might make you want a few soldiers sticking around too. Add to that the 2004 tsunami and you've got a country that’s really still just picking up the pieces.’
Jeremy, who’d just reached the ‘deep south’ from the eastern part of the country when I spoke to him, plans to next head up the west coast and to the Jaffna region, which is the area where most of the fighting took place. He mentioned that although it seems there won’t be many other tourists in that part of the country and the area is still heavily mined, he has generally felt very safe traveling throughout Sri Lanka.
He told me also that what he’s enjoyed most about the country so far are the people. He explains, ‘In contrast to places like Thailand and Bali, where locals see Western visitors disdaining their cultures… Sri Lankans are still fairly new to large-scale tourism and are a very friendly, welcoming people. They want to know everything about you and aren’t afraid to ask.’ He noted that the one question he is asked most frequently is, ‘What do you think of Sri Lanka?’
According to Jeremy, there is another advantage to visiting Sri Lanka. Since the landscape varies so drastically for such a small country ‘it makes a perfect trip for someone who would like to combine beaches, mountains, arid desert, temples, history and food but only have two to three weeks to spend.’

Thanks you for this article. Sri Lanka is indeed rising, albeit behind the news. Consider the following:
- Sri Lanka’s economy is to grow between 7.5 and 8.0 percent this year (only one year after the end of war).
- Tourist arrivals to the island are up by more than 50%
- Sri Lankan stocks are the best performing in Asia – for two years running
- One year after the end of the war, Sri Lanka has its largest foreign reserves ever at 5.8 billion dollars
- All major credit agencies have upgraded Sri Lanka’s ratings
- A world class transhipment hup Hambantota Port inaugurated and to be in action in November
- Travel warnings against Sri Lanka by the US/Britain/Australia/Canada removed
- A highly literate population, with some of the best human development indices in Asia
Things are looking up!

Balanced write up. Srilanka has the potential. Some Brits still live in the past centuries, wants to apply divide and conquer play book there as well.
They should forget about preying upon others and such looters mindset.

Very balanced article. It is true that Sri Lankans are well known for their hospitality and frienldiness. It is sad that Tamil Tigers and their pro-Tiger supporters have been spreading a huge load of misinformation specially targeting the economy. For 30 years that is what happened and now hopefully the world has realized a lot of good things about Sri Lanka and Lankans.

Believe me, you will never experience the genuine smile of Sri Lankans, their friendly behavior and true hospitality they offer in any other part of the world.

This report is a total contrast to that of the BBC. For thirty years, BBC depicted LTTE not as a terrorists but as freedom fighter. As our President said at the UN, terrorist is terrorist, no matter what veil it covers from.
Getting rid of LTTE is no simple achievement. When it was cornered and about to be wiped out, former colonials of the west had ganged up to demand Sri Lanka declare a ceasefire and let LTTE kingpins that trained suicide bombers like the one that killed Rajive Gandhi go free. Their aim had been to free the terrorists and let them fight us on a another day.
Anyway, Sri Lankan army had rid the last of the LTTE terrorist for good on the eve of May 18th, 1999. And not a single human bomb could have been blasted anywhere ever since. As the writer of this article says, usual Sri Lankan gesture of broad smiles have returned to its folks. Hundreds of thousands of cluster bombs and weapons were recovered or removed. 90% of the IDPs were settled. What more can be said, if anyone could roam the entire country at will regardless their race, creed, cast or color.
Instead of reporting such achievement to help reduce animosities of Tamils that eloped with LTTE, BBC and the likes started to have autopsy on how Sri Lanka won over the terrorists. They highlighted war crimes albeit one sided. No wonder LTTE rump and separatist sympathizers felt confident to wage a new hate campaign on the internet against Sinhalese. They wanted to incite ordinary Tamils and ignite another war.
It is apparent that Sri Lanka defense forces would take no chances. As for ordinary Sri Lankans who want Sri Lanka to be one, they are fortunate for President Mahinda Rajapakse is as popular as ever. They need not fear of the yesteryear colonials for one bit for Sri Lanka has powerful friends.

We all like to see Sri Lanka is rising no doubt about it. Cost of living has sky rocketed and keeps going up. Ordinary citizen is struggling for living. Sri Lanka is one of the most expensive places on earth for tourists, no good reason to ripped off locals and tourist unfairly in which any foreigner visits SL will never visit again as the expenses are unjustified. As a result SL popularity will eventually go down repercussions will follow.

Was a bit surprised at Asala Mala Kum’s comment. I was in sri Lanka recently, and found the place relatively cheap, and provides very good value for the money. The roads are a bit crowded, and transportation infrastructure needs improvement. But the people are friendly and helpful. Will go back again

I am not sure on what planet you live, but please take a look at the following.

I live in the same planet Onevoice live. I can produce factual unbiased data for the last 40 years or so. I was in SL 10 years ago but never experienced things were so expensive as today. My immediate family member’s visited SL 2 months ago I was shocked to hear the prices of hotels to the basic living had gone up drastically. I blame not the government but most of the citizens are lazy more than ever before they wait everything to come from other countries. SL government has no additional income to run the country but to spend all monies to feed the lethargic nuts.
Our basi talking real nonsense he says if I hate the country? I love my country more than any one else here it is all about not the country but the people who don’t contribute to the society as a whole. The root cause is majority of the people are lazy nothing else. I live in North America for a while now; I see how people here working so hard and productive that’s how these countries developed. Our people live here work very hard just like the other immigrants here sadly the same people back home is opposite.

These stats are good if you earn in hard currency.
What is the average salary of a sri lankan. I totally agree that the cost of living is high when you compare with the average sri lankan’s salary. Even if you go with dollars it is ex[pensive.
eddie
the motherland has the potential to become the greatest on earth. let the whole world see it!

Sri Lanka is truly a fantastic country. It’s so exotic and beautiful. The people there are among the friendliest I have ever met. I really hope that Sri Lanka will not become another Thailand, were western tourist exploit the country and the people. The people of Sri Lanka deserve so much more. So let’s visit Sri Lanka with an open and friendly heart, and don’t take drugs to this wonderful place. Treat everyone as you would treat your brother or sister. Sri Lanka is not another Thailand. It’s so much more.

What is the meaning of cost of living? If an ordinary citizen has to spend over 70% of the income for basic food (just enough to survive) is that called cheaper living? Do you know America could be the cheapest place to buy stuff on the earth compared to what they earn? (Things are cheaper than SL) and the quality is par.

This is an article fed my the Sri Lankan government which supplied the data and got it placed in the publication to coincide with maharaja’s visit to NY. People who write comments here do not know how the SL government operates, conning the gullible.

This is really a balance report about Sri Lanka. What Ulara has written is 100% correct. I’m not over-rating Sri Lanka but would like to add 2 things for tourists who wish to travel to this country. That is all about “adventure sports & ayurvedic treatment. I have read some blogs on politics in Sri Lanka. But it is quite sure that majority of Lankans are firmly behind president Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Ya compairing to other countries in Sri Lanka the cost of living is very low. And also friends please dont forget how many things we get free from the govenment.Medicine,Schools,Books,Univercities, etc etc,and also in these devoloped countries they have fuel, metal,Gold, diamonds, coal, but in sri lanka we dont have nothing we just have little tea thats all. But when u come to a devoloped country we can get free breathing air thats all.
So please donot underestimate our golden country.
Richard Diss
Dushy has surely got up from wrong side of the bed. Can you honestly name any of the previous Sri Lankan leaders who could brought such a prosperity and peace in to the country?

If I am not mistaken SL made an open invitation for developed nations to invest in SL for manufacturing as an alternate country to China. I am very much concern about this. Today whole China is polluted by emission emit from factories and you cant find drinkable water all most all the rivers have turned in to brown dirt it is very pathetic, no fresh air to breath, people cannot go out with out wearing a mask. (Mostly in major cities) We don’t want to see this happens to SL our tiny beautiful Island cannot tolerate such pollutions if we start selling our country for foreign countries to invest in manufacturing they don’t care/worry about our country. My only hope is nothing in this nature could happen to SL. As we all know Sri Lanka is based on Agriculture, Fishing, Tourism so on we must maintain our traditions in order to preserve the country for the future generations “May the Triple Bless Sri Lanka”.
Leela
dushy: Living in London and spending evenings in saloon section of pubs, you only know what you read in the internet about Sri Lanka. Don’t think we are all like the Kabalavas that you met in a random visit to the Island. At least take a cue from what Nilli and basi said about Sri Lanka before you write your comment. If Sri Lankans are gullible as you think then SF should have been the President of this country today.
Frank
Honestly Srilanka is a beautiful country with lots of beautiful people. sorry to disagree but the cost of living in Srilanka is not that high. The whole country is recovering and now is finally able to focus on development. So far Srilanka is faring well but it should not loose the track of this golden oppurtunity to transform into morelike a singapore with central focus on human happiness index like Bhutan. Whatever the grudge, lets all make a positive comment/contribution and wish this country every luck/support into transformation to an examplary destination. Lets help heal any tamil and sinhalese division and not widen any cracks found. lets play a positive role and feel proud rather than sowing hatred. Lets live the short human life peacefully n purposefully. I Love Tamils n Sinhalese. :)

While the country may be good value for tourists (I lived in the UK and US for 10 years before returning to Sri Lanka) it is a relatively expensive country to live in and earn at the local salary rates. Transport and food are very expensive, sometimes more expensive than the US even when the income parity isn’t taken into account. There is a distinct difference between cost of living for those in teh country to value for tourists. Unfortunately our bloated public service and paying for their salaries keeps our COL quite high.
asbu
There you go why this simple common sense is not understood by the others? Because you lived in UK and USA you know how the difference. Cost of living very high in SL and people work and earn money (2nd class citizens) in SL is struggling for their day today living, that’s the true. For those who earn Pounds and Dollars SL are relatively cheaper place on the earth. See the big picture come out from the box.
Rinaz
No doubt dt srilanka iz a beautiful country naturally.. But look how sad d politicians are.. Every first know d definition of ”cost of living’.. A random salesman cant save money, even wen hez living with his parents.. And even if he brings food from home.. If you compare the same guy with another from canada.. The salesman would save enugh money even after spending on food clothes and other needs.. He could even find a home for rent in a couple of months..

It looks like some UNP voters have been badly burned by this article. Losers, please crawl back to that hole called Sri Lanka Guardian where you can freely slander our country and leave this place alone.

I’ve visited Sri Lanka recently and found out that it’s a very beautiful country with warm welcoming people and really Hot & Spicy food..It was my second visit to Sri Lanka and I felt that it’s quite safer to visit..and I know lot of Russians will see the beauty of Sri Lanka..and it’s very sad and amazing to see that Sri Lankans who comment on this PUBLIC forum underestimating their country..I’ve seen couple of comments in this post..May be COL is bit higher than other countries..BUT still you should sacrifice something in order to take your country to a better position..We (Russians)also faced severe and critical situations in the 90’s but we managed to lift up our country after lot of sacrifices..(and Russians never underestimate their country..and we don’t want to compare our country with any other country in the world)..But finally I’d like to say that Sri Lanka is a place where you should be AT LEAST once in your life time..You should experience the Hospitality of the people and especially the Food.. :)
