Yesterday, videos and pictures appeared online purporting to depict the U.S. Air Force RQ-170 Sentinel Unmanned Aerial Vehicle that crashed in eastern Iraq last week while spying on suspected Iranian nuclear facilities for the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency.
The photos seemed to corroborate Iran state media's claims that the RQ-170, an unarmed stealth aircraft with the same basic shape as the U.S. Air Force's B-2 bomber, crash-landed "with little damage" after an "electronic-warfare" unit jammed the drone's control signal.
The aircraft in the photos, and to a lesser extent the grainy videos, is intact but shows some signs of scuffing on its belly as well as possible crude repairs to its right wing -- potentially an indication that the wing snapped off when the drone struck the ground.
The photos, which show the alleged RQ-170 in what appears to be a gymnasium, being inspected by military officials, were first spotted on Iranian Web forums by aviation reporter David Cenciotti.
But it's possible the airframe Iran is showing off is, in fact, an elaborate fake -- for several reasons.
First off, most U.S. analysts believe the Sentinel crashed from high altitude after suffering some kind of systems malfunction. Such a crash would almost certainly result in greater damage than is visible in the Iranian images.
Secondly, Iran has a long history of producing fake weapons or altered photos of weaponry in order to inflate the apparent strength of the dilapidated Iranian military. Several photos of the RQ-170 have been published since its first appearance in 2007. The photos could, in theory, provide the basis of a mock-up.
Finally, a source who has seen an RQ-170 up close at its home base in Utah told The Diplomat that the actual aircraft is larger than the object in the images and differs in the details of its construction.
The airframe in the gymnasium features a grill over its air intake that's vaguely reminiscent of the radar-blocking cover on the engine inlets of the recently-retired F-117 stealth fighter. "The drone being shown on Iranian TV cannot be real, as the RQ-170 I saw ... did not have a grill on the intake that I could see," the source said.
The Iranian object and the real RQ-170 also differ in the quality of their welds, the apparent materials used in their construction and, least compellingly, their paintjobs.
The Pentagon has confirmed it lost an RQ-170 but has avoided commenting on the images.

The Chinese have built faked F-117 and B-2 before -probably in an effort to test radar signature on the shapes or even build similar ones to test use. The RQ-170 doesn’t look that far off from the X-47B, which have been seen by the public and their images are all over the Internet. One can imagine that Iran probably built the replica a while ago, but only the news of a lost Sentinel gave them the most valuable publicity stunt they could ask for.
Reason
Nah…
This has been quickly thrown together…. it looks like a half finished kayak. You can see from the light that the finish is really rough and bad.
Even a Made in China Replica would be better than this.
a
It crashed. Wouldn’t that hurt your finish?
BillyG
Crashing would hurt the finish. Along with the grate over the air inlet, the paint, the wings, the airframe and everything else. Remaining relatively intact as the pictures show is showing something very unhurt.

The question is, why US hasn’t come out flatly say it is a fake?
May be it is a fake by Americans, or a copy of the real thing which Iranians are keeping it in a safe place. Iranians definitely have something, might be pieces of badly broken spy plane, they could still be useful.
Another thing is, it is conceivable the plane has a auto pilot program to land softly. It might be fooled by fake GPS signals. Some are saying Russians have this technology and sold it to Iran.
We all know software have bugs, drone software is no exception.
Tèo
If this drone is fake, 100% it was made in China.
John Chan
Maybe it will take another 60 years for Vietnam to fake one made in China, if they ask China for help.
Tèo
You are funny, why does people have to replicate the fake? Just buy a fake because it is cheapest.
John Chan
@Teo,
I must agree with you, Vietnam does not need to fake anything; it can buy everything it needs. Faking and making are such hassle.
Tèo
The displayed drone must be a fake because it was impossible for Iran to jam and control the drone then land it without any significant damage (Things like it was in a Will Smith’s action sci-fi movie). If this happened to be true, the ally would have been deploying a total war against Iran to maintain their superior advantage in technical warfare.
Like now with China, which is World No1 in space technologies and replicating industries, it is too late and too complicate for U.S and its band to figure out what and how to handle the truth.
Oh uh I can place an order for another 1:1 RQ-170 replica to one of my suppliers in Guangdong and get the sample within a week. Of course the replica can fly, too (but not too high), using an radio remote control.

Yeah, China is number one in space technology… Hence the faked launches, landings, broadcasts…
Cool story, bro

If this is truly a fake (and I hope it is), then the government should not be adverse to commenting on the ‘fact’.
yang zi
@anon is making more sense. why Iran make a fake drone if US can just simply say it is a fake?
I’ve read somewhere that the drone is still been tested by the manufacturer. so it is conceivable that this thing looks unfinished.
Ron
No, the drone has been in use for a while now and their are pictures of it flying out of Kandahar, Afghanistan. Besides if it really was all that important to get you think that the US wouldn’t get it? I mean all of the “accidents” to Iran’s missile and nuclear research sites are just that. Right?
Fat-Tuesday
Aiyah, How come so many fake stuffs from china?
How about 3.2 trillions reserve? Must also be fake.
Tim
Absoutely fake! What Air Force aircraft would be painted Starship Enterprise Green/Gray, Yikes… And the inlet grate on the is just unbelievable. Come on Iran, hire a better model builder. Maybe one who has an internet link outside of the Iran and Google to look at the many photos of the RQ-170 on the net. Also shame on most of the media in America for not calling out a fake when they see one.
Nick
From an AP story:
John Pike, an expert on military and intelligence technology for GlobalSecurity.org, said in an email that the drone shown on Iranian TV looked like “a parade float model of a Sentinel” rather than the high-tech robotic surveillance aircraft itself.
Iran is known for faking things but i do agree why do it when the US could easily say it is a fake the opportunity was probably just to great for them to pass up, because if it was real it would not be in a gym. It crashed into a bunch of pieces that Iran did recover but that dose not make a good press conference of a bunch of broken pieces that look like nothing, Iran wants people to know what they have even thought they dont have exactly what they want us to believe they have. it is an old spy game, Iran just sucks at it, or maybe this is really the best they can do, then i am not so worried.
He said that the shape of the aircraft differed from that shown in most other photographs of the Sentinel, and that it was in better shape than would be expected after a crash. “I’m guessing this is a mock-up they have prepared for a parade,” he said.
Keep in mind, this is also the country that manipulated a missile launch image to hide the fact that one missile had failed to fire and that is suspected of welding 55-gallon drums together to look like S-300 launchers.

I liked the Pentagon guy on the briefing who could barely keep the smirk off his face when talking about Iran’s new prized possession.
Dave
We just cannot get over the lost of one of our latest gadget?
Our Pride is hurting so much that we are digging up every possible reason that this is a fake.
Everyone that is except for the guys who lost it.
Let stop behaving like the proverbial ostrich…..time will confirm that this is the real thing and other countries will gain from this treasure trove.
Lesson to be learn, “Don’t play with overtly expensive toy, when you are broke and the general populace is jobless and starving”.

Well put, Dave.

General Populace is jobless and starving?
Sounds like someone’s describing life immediately outside of China’s cities.

BREAKING NEWS

The Pentagon just announced that they have made ANOTHER mistake and they haven’t actually lost the RQ 170 The Beast of Kandahar, but instead have lost her sister ship –
“The Bath Tub of Tehran”
This is the drone we have been seeing in Iranian TV clips.
This drone is so new that they didn’t even have time to show it the paint tin before it was put into active service over the nuclear facilities of Iran – now that’s dedication for ya!
Mike
Say what you will about the Chinese, but if they were going to fake something like this they would put much more thought and detail into it. The Iranians have a history of being very shabby liars. Like a version of the USSR constructed entirely out of duct-tape and spray paint.

fake… do a google image search for drone. Notice all of them have US Army or other marks stamped over them. This one had nothing.
Hey me
Hey, Did you guys know that the original drone itself was made in China (or at least 99% of it except the price tag).
Hey me
Also Iran is planning to hand it over to CIA to prove that they had the originak original fake drone.
haha!
yusuf
US tried to send in commandos to retrieve the drone, I highly doubt it was fake.

There is a lot of speculation as to whether the UAV shown off by the Iranians is a fake RQ-170. Could it not be that the UAV is not a fake RQ-170; but rather, not an RQ-170?
The RQ-170 was only formally acknowledged a couple of years ago, and years after it’s introduction to service. It was Iran that named the UAV as an RQ-170, not the US. And if Iran’s only 170 reference has been the distant and inconclusive photos available on the net, then that would be understandable. The Pentagon have simply nodded along to the Iranian’s claims over a UAV that doesn’t even belong to the Pentagon.

What Iran showed is a 100% real RQ-170. People should not let wishful thinking take over their reasoning. Why would Iranians embarrass themselves by displaying a fake? I know people will argue the RQ-170 is not that cutting edge. They are wrong again. It is one of the most advanced operational drones the US possesses. The lesson learned from this is that we should not believe the hype about UAVs. They are not going to replace manned combat planes anytime soon.
Matthew Rice
It is definitely fishy that the entire bottom of this aircraft is hidden by a banner. I’m not saying it is or isn’t a fake, but just remember that deception of some kind could be a strong possibility.

The comments by Chinese nationals pretending to be Westerners is a real turn off. Could a moderator please censor these comments as they are a waste of time to read. To spot these comments, simply look for lack of pluralisation and inappropriate use of cliches, oh … and some type of non-constructive, angry anti-Western bias – with a hint of a superiority complex mixed with an inferiority complex.
JUSTSAYNO
And you thought it was only the Chinese government which hates freedom of speech…
JUSTSAYNO
It’s fun to watch the US nationalists engaging in full wishful thinking mode. Look, the US spies on Iran for Israel. STUXNET and then killings of the Iranian nuke scientists don’t happen without major governmental support. Why not just admit this and move on?
It’s not like government don’t spy on each other, if Iran had this kind of technology it would use it for sure to spy on the rest of the world enemies and friends alike.

Who is David Axe, what are his credentials?

I am wondering how the Iranians supposedly detected a low observable drone to carry out an intercept of any kind.
I don’t deny as I stated before they got one but more likely found the debris from its crash site. They are programmed for either auto-destruct or fly a pre-programmed course if the signal is interferred with.
Possibly a model was made with the original intent to show what the pieces recovered would look like but then someone higher up has decided to try and pass the model off for the real deal.
ALL nations have reason for deception in military related matters, the motives often vary and unknown to those on the outside.
We can only speculate.
My interest is in more the technical side.
Matt
You have to remember that the footage is largely for domestic consumption, not for our benefit, we lost it, they got it, that is all that matters. Intact or in pieces, if it is in pieces they put it together, if it is together they take it to pieces.
Iran will develop a V-2 version like the Ambassador of Death, but true development just like the F-117 and the J-20 takes years so about 11 years for a prototype to emerge.
Then it depends on the type of versions they seek to produce, a drone of course, but also a much larger B-2. Iran will sell the same thing to both Russia and China.
monika
If it was a fake drone with Iran then why US sent requesting Iran to return it back?
Sounds like people do not have update of whats going on within, either we are mislead or we are misleading others, it is very serious, something is wrong somewhere, are we not allowed to question our government, would they response to their voters?
Patto
The Iranians most likely do have the real drone but it is certainly not what they are showing us in this video, that is what is causing the most debate. The real drone is probably in a lot of pieces in a HAS somewhere under a lot of security not in a lightly guarded basketball court.
tsun tzu
Ok, so the drone matches pictures that have been released from the military. What that tells me is the the real drone would be about a 10% the size and much more sophisticated. The real drones are likely flying regular missions, undetected with a big of white fauxdrone being sent out on occasion complete with the best 80s technology that money can buy. The fauxdrone’s have a slight radar signal and fool the subjects into thinking that they are tracking the real thing, when the real thing is actually looking up their….
