By Nitin Gokhale

For too long Delhi’s policymakers have watched idly as China’s military prowess has grown, says Nitin Gokhale. Not anymore.

Last May, just days before India’s general election results were announced, the country’s highest policy making body for security matters was convened by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Its mandate: Find ways of enabling India’s military to take on an increasingly powerful (and belligerent) China.

At the end of a marathon meeting, the Cabinet Committee on Security initiated a comprehensive, well-funded plan to bolster India’s land, air and naval forces to counter China’s rising military prowess. The plan is historic, coming after years of dithering by an Indian establishment seemingly paralysed by memories of the country’s humiliating defeat at the hands of the Chinese in a brief but brutal war in 1962.

Since the CCS plan was launched, there have been significant and wide-ranging signs that Indian policymakers are finally willing to realistically assess possible military responses to China’s rise. One clear example is a new division of troops aimed exclusively at the border region of the two great powers. India is now mid-way through raising two mountain divisions for the north-eastern border area with China, with the two divisions pencilled in to be ready for deployment by the middle of next year.

The goal is to plug existing gaps in India’s preparedness along the Arunachal Pradesh-China frontier, and the two divisions, consisting of about 20,000 well-armed troops, will include a squadron of India’s armoured spearhead—Soviet-built T-90 tanks and a regiment of artillery. They will be backed by enhanced command, control, communications and intelligence (C4I) capabilities aimed at covering the Tibet region.

But that’s certainly not all.

The Indian Air Force has over the past year deployed 36 Su-30MKI, its most advanced multi-role fighter aircraft, to Tezpur in the country’s north-east in response to the People's Liberation Army Air Force's seven airbases in Tibet and southern China.

Meanwhile, the Indian Navy is working to counter the growing clout of the PLA Navy. The current thinking at Indian naval headquarters is that China will move to aggressively increase its presence in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) to secure its extended energy supply lines (despite its name, military planners in Beijing don’t feel India has ownership of this expanse of water).

As a consequence, the Indian Navy’s plans are based on the premise that it needs to be a fully-networked and flexible force capable of meeting any ‘out of area’ contingency. Successive Indian naval chiefs since 2004 have spoken about the need for the Navy to have ‘longer sea legs’ by 2020 and to be capable of influencing the outcome of land battles. The importance of the Navy’s role was underscored during the 1999 Kargil skirmish between India and Pakistan, when the Indian Navy played a crucial but silent role in blockading Pakistan’s sea lanes, putting Islamabad under significant pressure to end the conflict quickly.

Do u know why India is so backwards frm western countries. Ans seems very complex bt in reality its quite simple :

          1. Indian ppl r very-very SELFISH (almost 99% ppl).
*”SELFISHNESS”* is the root couse of All Evils eg. corruption,diversity,rich-poor gap etc in india. It creates fear for one’s life, thats why no1 comes forward 2 fight evil

          2. LAZYNESS is another evil in indians, which creates under-development and slow progress

          3. IGNORANCE is another evil which gives rise 2 factors like communal diversity, lack of education, promotion of political crime etc. Thre s a saying tht “parent’s ignorance spoils children”. Thats the reason why india has no unity in diversity(main cause of social unrest)

          4. Last but not least, indians r NOT-PATROTIC (again root cause- Selfishness & Ignorance) ,which encourages enemy country ….

In simple words, SELFISHNESS is the prime evil which creates distress in india. Jst remove selfishness fm evry indian mind(only God can do it) & india will be on top of the world.

      2. Pak commando ranking 2nd best, India commando ranking 20th. 80% of pak army can fight at nite, while for india its only 40%

      3. Pak has Shaheen III, Range-2500km. China has Dongfeng 40, Range-13000km. While India has Prithvi II, Range-2000km.

      4. China navy fleet is 5 times bigger than Indian navy, air fleet 3 times biggr, artillery 10 times biggr

Data u hve given is so lame.I dont know from where u pakis post these stuff. U should not be so pethatic in something which require a lot of debates.

        Pakistan and India.
Im posting their real military and economic facts.

        ARMY

        Pakistan-
There are around 612000 active army personals in pakistans army.
        Pakistan’s ground forces
are equipped SMG’s like Heckler & Koch MP5, Heckler & Koch MP5K, Rifles like Heckler & Koch G3 (PA’s main rifle),M4 carbine. With Other Chinese
        weapons like FIM 92
        Stinger SAMs, BGM-71
        TOW anti-tank missiles.
        But PAK ARMY CURRENTLY
        HAVE ONLY 320 AL-
        KHALID TANKS
        , 320 NUMBERS
        OF T-80UD TANKS
        AND 300 AL-
ZARAR TANKS. ( There are some recent developments thre4 numbers are in approximation).
So Pakistani army is like any other modern world army which cannot be underestimated.

        India -
India army has 1,325,000 active soldiers which is the one of the largest in the world.
        Indian
        ground forces are
        equipped mostly by
        home-made or Soviet
        technologies like IR guided
        9K35 Strela-10 SAMs, 3rd
        Gen IR guided Nag anti-
tank missiles, and large number of UAVs
        Indian army has 200 T90S, 1900 T72 UPG, 500 T55.
So india army is seen as one of the rising tough ground force.

        AIRFORCE-
Now a days airforce play a key role in a war. Let it be blasting opponents defences, to destroy stradegically important buildings and With a very important role of transport, supplies.

        PAF-
        Pakistan Air Force
        currently operates nearly
        800 manned aircraft,
        including over 413 combat
        aircraft, 274 training
        aircraft, 31 transports and
        tankers and seven special
        mission aircraft
        With 50 JF 17 and 100 F 16 FALCON (83 1983 built)
PAF clearly lacks supiriority in air with mostly outdated jets in its fleets, and also becz of nt having apparently big plan to achieve new aircrafts in large number.
        IAF-
        IAF with over 1,600
        aircraft is the world’s
        fourth largest air force. With 151 SU-MKI, 69 MIG 29S, 200 MIG 21 BIS/BISON.
IAF has 470+ frontline fighters, and 250+ ground bombers , 249 transport aircrafts. 3 AWACS, 6 TANKERS.

Apart from these India is closing on 126 multirole fighters and will choose from typhoon and rafale for final deal. Iaf will also induct 220 sukhoi mki by 2019, And $ 35b project with russia to produce 250 5th gen stealth fighters till 2030, With LCA project going on which will induct 120 tejas by 2017.
This way IAF will become far more superior than PAF in numbers and technology. (And yeah we all knwow the skills of india pilots.)

        NAVY-
        After the overwhelming
        losses in the 1971 war
        against India, Pakistan
        rapidly increased the size
        of its naval fleet which
        doubled in the 1980s after
        a massive 3.2 billion dollar
        military and economic aid
        by US President Ronald
        Reagan. At present,
        Pakistan’s navy owns over
45 vessels , most of them
        of US or European origin
        which include submarines,
        destroyers, frigates, patrol
        and mine warfare boats. It
        operates from its sole
        naval port in Karachi and
        naval facilities in UK, USA
        and France. It had
        recently been involved in
        various humanitarian
        operations during the
        2005 Tsunami in South
        East Asia. Indian Navy on
the other hand, is a three
        dimensional naval force
        consisting of missile-
        capable warships, an
        aircraft carrier, mine
        sweepers and a host of
        marine aircrafts; most of
        its warships indigenously
        built in its own dockyards.
        The navy operates from
        its major naval bases in
        Visakhapatnam, Mumbai,
        Goa and the Andaman
        Islands. Indian Navy has
        significant capabilities of
        being a true blue water
        Navy and is experienced
        both in war and
        peacekeeping operations
        in the Indian Ocean.

        CONCLUSION-
        India clearly has
        strategic and
        technological
        superiority over the
        conventional forces of
        Pakistan. Indian Navy is
        larger in fleet and
        personnel size with a
        more varied range of
        ships including an aircraft
        carrier while Pakistan’s
        Navy is smaller and has
        no aircraft carriers.
        Indian’s IAF is equipped
        with highly capable
        fighters like 4.5th
        generation Su-30s and
        4th gen Mirage 2000s
        which are
        technologically superior
        to Pakistan PAF’s F-16s
        and Mirage IIIs.
        Additionally Indian
        pilots are better trained
        and more capable in air
        combat than Pakistani
        forces as was
        demonstrated by its
        various wars with
        Pakistan or joint
        exercises with US and
        UK. In the area of
        conventional ground
        forces both the Indian as
        well as Pakistani Army is
        well equipped and highly
        trained to survive in
        extremities of topography
        and climate in combat
        conditions.

U ppl know very well that india attaked pakistan in 1948, 1965, 1986 siachen and 1999 kargil with 10 times bigger army and succesively got defeated so its clear that its Quality not quantity that matters in war, and Quality of pak army is better, india has only numbers and no specialty. I really pity u ppl that still think u r better. I could have writeen better than this but as every one knows truth so its a useless debate, atleast 4 me.

Anyways, i m desperately in my lifetime waiting to hear the dream broadcasting words…
“” Assalam walekum, its radio pakistan, newdelhi centre….. Amen. “”
Maybe need 2 wait atleast 50 years, but its a dream sure to reality. Because hindu indians dont even know how 2 dream but pakistan not only dream but work toward it. Think and burn.

            1986 siachen-

do you really know what happened there huh?
No ur mum dsnt knw th answr. Ill tell you.
            India launchedOperation
            Meghdoot on 13
            April 1984 when the Kumaon
Regiment of the Indian Army and
the Indian Air Force went into
            the glacier region to preempt
            Pakistani aggression. Within a few
days, the Indians were in control
of the area, as Pakistan was
beaten to the Saltoro Ridge high
            ground by about a week.
            The
two northern passes– Sia La and
            Bilafond La – were quickly
            secured by India. When the
Pakistanis hiked up to the glacier
            in 1984, they found that a 300-
            man Indian battalion was already
            there, dug into the highest
            mountaintops.The
            contentious area is about
2,300 sq km to nearly 2,600 sqkm of territory in India.
            Since 1984 Pakistan has
            launched several attempts to
            displace the Indian forces, but
with little success. The most well
known was in 1987, when an
attempt was made by Pakistan to
dislodge India from the area. The
            attack was masterminded by
Pervez Musharraf A special garrison (SSG) with
            eight thousand troops was built
            at Khapalu. The immediate aim
was to capture Bilafond La but
            after bitter fighting that included
            hand to hand combat, the
            Pakistanis were thrown back and
            the positions remained the same.

Result and ground position in 2011 -

The Indian army controls all of
the 70 kilometres (43 mi) long
Siachen Glacier and all of its
tributary glaciers, as well as the
three main passes of the Saltoro
            Ridge immediately west of the
            glacier—Sia La, Bilafond La, and
            Gyong La—thus holding onto the
            tactical advantage of high
            ground.
            The Pakistanis control the glacial
            valley just five kilometers
            southwest of Gyong La.

But billion dollar ques- HOW PAK COME WON ??? XD

            1999 kargil war -
            what happened?
Pakistani soldiers pretending to b jihadis captured the posts near kargil which were not patrolled by indian army due to winters.

            Losses-

India- India claim it lost 543 soldiers, bt i think number is close to 790 as stated by neutral scources.

            Pakistan-
            Sharif later said
            that over 4,000 Pakistani troops
            were killed in the operation

            Result -

PAK HAS TO RETREAT, NO LOSS OR GAIN OF AREAS TO BOTH SIDES.

            A retired
            Pakistani Army General, Lt Gen
Ali Kuli Khan, lambasted the war
as “a disaster bigger than the
East Pakistan tragedy”,adding that the plan was “flawed
            in terms of its conception,
            tactical planning and execution”
            that ended in “sacrificing so
            many soldiers.”

DO U STILL THINK U WON THIS WAR ?

Why should India and Pakistan be at each others’ throat? Is it because of religion? Can’t we all go beyond religion and look at each as fellow human beings. We, after all inhabit the same planet. We are so pathetic, our views myopic and too immature. We all bleed and the color of our blood is the same. Can’t we make this world a better place to live in and leave personal, religious and cultural differences behind?

We, after all inhabit the same planet. We are so pathetic, our views myopic and too immature. We all bleed and the color of our blood is the same. Can’t we make this world a better place to live in and leave personal, religious and cultural differences behind? Let us all grow up!

i think that the Chinese are already in a big trouble of managing their huge population.so they may not dare to escalate a major war,but we must be alert and be prepared for the worst.I think we are not going to reach china if our UPA govt is wasting resources for getting prepared to battle against the opposition.i think following the ‘carrot and stick’ principle with china is the only way out now.
